Recent events have more than illustrated the fragility of ultra-lean supply chains. Global haulage driver shortages, Brexit implications, and the various impacts of COVID have created the perfect storm. This is further accentuated by the rapidly changing patterns of consumer behaviour, which combine a desire for instant gratification, with an increased concern over the ethical and sustainable impacts of shopping. Chief Supply Chain Officers (CSCOs) must somehow balance all these demands in an effort to manage costs, speed and quality of service. 

Some faced with the disruption of the past few months, may reach the conclusion that maintaining this balance in today’s complex, fast-moving environment is a fantasy, and that increased costs creeping back into the supply chain is an inevitability. Teradata can, however, help CSCOs avoid this, while maintaining the critical balance across all supply chain characteristics.

Visibility Across Silos

Visibility is central to overall supply chain success. To make the right business decisions in a timely manner it’s essential to know, at a granular level, not just the location of goods, but everything related to those goods and their movement. They are effective and add value, but further extenuate the challenge as they also operate within silos, and thereby don’t support the goal of overall visibility.

This same granular, real-time operational data can also be analysed to create powerful new predictive analytical capabilities, providing early warnings of arising issues, and hence a longer window to develop the appropriate response to them.

Viewing all the data relating to specific goods movements – not only their location, but the costs, CO2 footprint, performance against plan and against previous time periods - provides insights into potential weak links. The alternative, manually reconciling data from multiple sources in multiple formats, can quickly occupy most of the CSCOs teams limited resource – not to mention increase the potential for errors or mismatches of data from different silos. A single data platform that acts as a source of consistent data, and which can operate at the massive scale and near-real-time speed of today’s global supply chains is therefore becoming table stakes.
